About Us
The Disclosure Toolkit is provided by Offploy
Offlploy is a Community Interest Company and Charitable Incorporated Organisation working to make the world a safer place by supporting people at risk of offending. We empower them to access greater opportunities and achieve their full potential.
70% of our team have lived experience of the Criminal Justice System, so we understand the hurdles faced by ex-offenders.
The Disclosure Toolkit is provided for free as a charitable venture by The Offploy Foundation. The surplus from Offploy CIC funds 100% of the Foundation’s operating and admin costs, leaving the Foundation free to use every donation for charitable activities.
Why We Provide The Disclosure Toolkit
At Offploy, we believe that everyone deserves a chance to rewrite their story and move forwards on a better path. Getting back into employment, a home or even opening a bank account is a huge part of this, but we have found that the confusing world of disclosure is a real barrier.
Understanding Spent and Unspent Convictions
To explain: past convictions are ‘spent’ or ‘unspent’.
Once convictions are ‘spent’, a person no longer has to declare them to a potential employer, landlord or bank. But throughout the entire sentencing process, individuals are not told when their offence will become ‘spent’. They are expected to work it out for themselves. This is just not possible for people without a detailed understanding of the law.
And the worst thing is, it’s illegal to get the complex calculations wrong.
The Consequences of Overdisclosure
We don’t think anxious people should be declaring spent convictions ‘just in case’. This is called overdisclosure.
Overdisclosure makes someone trying to move on with their life face unnecessary prejudice and ultimately lose life-changing opportunities such as getting that first job, secure house or something as simple as a bank account.
A Simple Solution with Real Impact
That’s why Offploy created the Disclosure Calculator to instantly tell people when their conviction(s) will be spent, and our chatbot to help them write a disclosure statement if they need one. This simple service means more people confidently applying for jobs, accessing housing and services and building a positive life away from crime.
It costs Offploy £0.5117 each time someone uses the calculator. With over 12 million people with convictions, we will continue to provide this service for free—but can’t do it without your help.
