Travelling as a British Passport Holder with a Criminal Record

Carry-On Suitcase

Useful Travel Tips

Double-check entry requirements before booking: Every country sets its own rules for visitors with convictions. Always check the latest official guidance before making travel plans.

Apply for visas early: Some countries may request additional documents such as police certificates, court records or further background information. Allow extra time to have your visa approved.

Be honest on applications: Providing incorrect or incomplete information can lead to refusals, cancelled visas or future travel restrictions.

Carry supporting documents: It can help to travel with copies of relevant paperwork such as visa approvals, return bookings, accommodation details or supporting letters.

Travelling to Europe? ETIAS may apply: UK travellers visiting many European countries now need an ETIAS travel authorisation before departure. ETIAS is not a visa, but it includes security checks and questions about certain criminal convictions.
